I was looking for a quiet getaway, far from the crowded tourist spots, somewhere untouched and soaked in raw, Himachali charm. That’s when I first heard about Narkanda. Narkanda delivered just that and so much more.
Here’s a list of my top 10 favorite spots in Narkanda that made this trip unforgettable – places that are stunning, secluded, and straight out of a postcard. If you ever plan for a trip to this paradise in the years 2025, let my experience guide you to the best of Narkanda.
Hatu Peak
Why It Stood Out: The trek to Hatu Peak was very thrilling-the way lies through dense deodar and rhododendron forests, with anticipation as you climb toward that summit. The view is just spectacular at the peak. I remember standing there like an entire Himalayas visible ahead, snow-clad with majesty.
Memorable Moment: I saw sunset here, and the mountains were gold. It’s a hike you never forget.
Tip: Try climbing early in the morning when crowds are lesser and try catching the sunrise – magic
Hatu Mata Temple
Why It Was Unique: Such a little wooden temple in the form of Hatu Mata, considered to be none other than Mandodari from the Ramayana, carved on top of Hatu Peak in an intricate fashion and serenity. The temple is that serene with cedar trees all around and overlooking valleys below it.
Memorable Moment: The moments spent watching the locals light their incense and make offers of their prayers here had me feeling humbled-so much a cultural experience and a spiritual one.
Tip: Even if you have no interest in temples as such, do take the time to sit here awhile and soak up the view
Tanni Jubbar Lake
Why It Stood Out: This small forest lake is the perfect stop point to rest all the hiking legs done. I spent an entire afternoon here reading a book, soaking in the peace and quiet.
Memorable Moment: There were a couple of local families picnicking, and one nice woman even offered me some of her homemade pakoras. The lake was like from a dream because the reflection of trees is perfectly portrayed in the still waters of the lake.
Tip: Bring a packed lunch, and have a picnic since the place is suitable for having a picnic.
Stokes Farm
Why It Was Amazing: This is the first time I have ever witnessed apple orchards in full bloom. Apple farming was first introduced by Samuel Stokes from America, and it can still be seen here today. The walk through apple and cherry orchards resembles a walk into another world.
Most Memorable Moment: Fresh, crunchy apples were eaten right from the trees. If you are there during autumn, do not miss this experience!
Tip: You are allowed to taste new apples and cherries from fresh harvests. Don’t ask, they are very polite and warm.
Skiing in Narkanda
Why It Emerged: It was one of those dreams to ski in Narkanda; I had never skied before, but the trainer was very patient. They made me glide down beginners’ slopes.
Memorable Moment: Remember, there is nothing that really compares to the swoosh of sliding down soft powdered snow with Himalayas stretching out in every direction
General Tips for First-Time Guests: Take the lessons along the slopes; they shall really take good care of every thing you will need. They will even give or lend you the rented one.
Mahamaya Temple
Why It Stood Out: This temple of Goddess Kali is about 7 kilometers from Narkanda. It looks very far-off from civilization as it is beautifully carved, surrounded by pine forests and almost mystical.
Memorable Moment: The breeze that was blowing and the ringing of temple bells with a panoramic view of the valley over this temple made me feel that I had discovered a secret place.
Tip: Early morning or late afternoon will get you a relatively quieter visit with fewer crowds.
Jor Bagh
Why it stood out: Jor Bagh is one of those places where I kept finding myself blissfully alone. It is a nice meadow, lush green and lined with pines, offering some easy treks.
Memorable Moment: It was a dusk when we set up the small campfire here; watching the stars come out over the night sky was such an unforgettable experience.
Tip: This is a great place if you are a camping lover. It is serene with minimal light pollution, so that night sky is great.
Kotgarh
What makes it special: Kotgarh is that old-world feel. Orchards seem to be never-ending, and the people here are so warm.
Memorable Moment: I was accommodated in a homestay with a tiny accommodation. My hosts gave me some typical Himachali food prepared at their home. They even took me to the orchard where they grew apples and told stories of the same.
Tip: You should always prefer homestays, for they are not something a hotel can ever provide.
Thanedar
Why It Caught My Attention: Thanedar is this very small little village, not so far from Narkanda. It was also replete with many more apple orchards and these Himachali houses with lots of traditional appeal.
Memorable Moment: Visited St. Mary’s Church, a small but lovely structure built in 1843. The serenity and history of this place give it a unique charm.
Tip: Take a walk through the orchards during early spring-the apple blossoms are a sight to see.
Jalori Pass
What makes it special: Although it was little further from Narkanda, Jalori Pass could not be skipped at all. The serendipity of a visit from Serolsar Lake to Raghupur Fort was unforgettable.
Memorable Moment: As the day finally saw the advent, I reached Serolsar Lake. Being among huge mountains with crystal-clear water on every side, the scenario portrayed pure peace.
Tip: Start early and bring along plenty of water. Secondly, the weather can really change quickly up here, so pack accordingly.
Final Thoughts
Narkanda is so much more than a hill station-it’s a place that stays in your heart. It’s the view, the quiet, and kind locals that make you live this experience long even when you are back in home.
If you search for adventure mixed with the need for relaxation and experience about culture, Narkanda has already been waiting for you.
