Sissu is one of the most modest, beautiful, and small villages present in Himachal Pradesh. It is situated within the Lahaul Valley. When I first heard of it, I did not know much about the place.
But once I went there for a few days, I fell in love with its silent breeze, snow-filled landscapes, and friendly people. If you are planning for a trip, here are 15 things I think you will really enjoy doing in Sissu: explore the best Sissu Tour Packages to make the most of your adventure!
Sissu Waterfall Visit
The Sissu Waterfall is the most beautiful thing that I saw in the village. The water falls from a great height, and the sound is so soothing. I sat there for some time, feeling the cool mist on my face. You can get to the waterfall by an easy trek or drive, and the view is breathtaking.
Tip: Arrive early in the morning, preferably when it is less crowded, and enjoy the serenity of the peaceful water.
Spend time at Sissu Lake
Situated at Sissu Lake are the snow-covered mountains reflecting off its surface. I walked around the lake, enjoying the silence and fresh air. It is just good for sitting here and resting after this adventure-filled day.
Tip: Pack some snacks along and enjoy a little picnic around the lake.
Watch the sunset from Sissu Helipad
The Sissu Helipad is this flat area where you can witness the complete valley down in front of you. I did this during sunset, and the sky looked painted into orange and pink hues. It’s a lovely place for photographs or just sit and enjoy this beauty of nature.
Tip: Wear warm clothes because it gets chilly in the evening.
Visit the Sissu Monastery
This small monastery is a peaceful place that shows the Buddhist culture of the region. When I visited, the locals were kind enough to explain some traditions to me. The colorful prayer flags and the quiet surroundings made me feel very calm.
Tip: Spend some time sitting quietly here to soak in the peaceful vibes.
Walk through the Lahaul Valley.
Walking through Lahaul Valley in Sissu is one of the favorite activities that I relish doing. In summer, the fields are green and snow covered in winter. Pictures of white mountains and clear blue sky caught my imagination perfectly. It would be perfect for photographs or just marveling the natural beauty.
Drive through the Atal Tunnel
It was an engineering marvel connecting Sissu to Manali, and what an experience while driving through it was; and once I came out on the Sissu side, the snow-white landscapes looked as beautiful as any postcard.
Tip: The tunnel is open all year round, and you can visit Sissu even in the winters.
Trek to Ghepan Lake
This was one of my favorite moments of the trip. The hike to Ghepan Lake is challenging, but it was totally worthwhile for the breathtaking sight of crystal clear, blue water amidst snow.
Secret discovery, really-this is a place few people know about.
Tip: Go with a guide and carry water and snacks with you, enough for at least a couple of hours.
Have Fun in the Snow during Winter
Sissu turns into a snowy paradise in winters. I loved so much playing in the snow, sledding, and even trying to do some snowboarding. The landscapes are perfect for making up snowmen or for just letting go and having a snowball fight.
Tip: Rent snow boots and jackets from the village if you do not have yours.
Be adventurous and try local food
Sissu food is quite simple but very delicious. I had thukpa-the noodle soup-and momos-dumplings, and they were just perfect for such cold weather. Locals also present with barley tea, which is warm and soothing.
Tip: Go to small local family-run eateries for the best taste.
Shop at Keylong Market
Keylong is a nearby town where I spent a few hours wandering around the local market. They sell beautiful woolen shawls, hand-knitted socks, and other souvenirs. I bought a few gifts for my family and friends here.
Tip: Bargain a little to get good prices.
Camp by the Chandra River
Camping along the Chandra River was one of the most peaceful nights I had in my trip. The sound of the river could be heard while sitting by a campfire under the stars. It’s really a great way of bonding with nature and avoiding the hectic city life.
Tip: Bring warm sleeping bags and sturdy tents as the nights are very cold.
Try Yak Safari
I did not know that it was possible to ride a yak until I went to Sissu! It is quite an amusing and hilarious experience. Locals drive the yaks, and you enjoy the surrounding view while riding on these friendly giants.
Tip: Do not forget to take photos- it is not so often that you get to ride a yak!
Palden Lhamo Dhar Shrine
This small shrine is about a short trek from Sissu. It’s a place of worship where locals visit to pray, and the vista from here is breathtaking. The trek itself is really very beautiful, with snow and trees all around.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes because the path can be slippery in winter.
Go Birdwatching
If you are an ornithophile, you would love Sissu. One morning, I woke up early and saw quite a few Himalayan monals and other colorful birds flying about. It is a quiet hobby and great for nature lovers.
Tip: Bring your binoculars for a closer view of the birds.
Take a Day Trip to Spiti Valley
Spiti Valley is not too far from Sissu, and the ride itself can be an adventure. Landscapes are barren and monasteries are old, and so contrary to the lush green appearance of the state of Sissu. It’s a great way to see more of the region in the Himalayas.
Tip: Start early in the morning so that you can return to Sissu by evening.
