Manali is perhaps one of the most beautiful hill stations in India, and, of course, a paradise for snow lovers. If you’re planning to visit Manali during April-May, you must have wondered where exactly you can spot the snowfall.

Don’t worry; I recently visited and discovered everything, which will assist you in enjoying your trip thoroughly.

Can you see snowfall in Manali during April and May?

Yes, you can most definitely find some snow in and around Manali during April and May. As the main town of Manali does not see much snow this time of year, there are plenty of them in the high-altitude places nearby.

Melted snow creates a gorgeous contrast of the green valleys along with snowcapped mountains behind. This gives the view all the more striking, making it ideal for taking photographs and having a relaxed atmosphere.

Best Places to Find Snow in Manali in April-May

Rohtang Pass:

If the pass is open, you should experience snow at Rohtang, which usually opens mid-May, depending on the weather conditions.

Scenic beauty in snow-covered landscapes is simply breathtaking and one can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and snow scooter rides.

The journey to Rohtang is thrilling-a snaking road and the panoramic views of the mountains surrounding it. Take all permits, as they are essential to visit the pass.

Solang Valley:

Just 13 km from Manali, Solang Valley is a popular spot for snow lovers. Even if Rohtang Pass is closed, you can still find snow here in early May.

The valley offers adventure sports like paragliding, skiing, and cable car rides with stunning snowy views.

The cable car ride provides a bird’s-eye view of the snow-clad valley, which is truly mesmerizing. Families and adventure enthusiasts alike will find Solang Valley an exciting destination.

Gulaba:

Situated on the way to Rohtang Pass, Gulaba is another great place to enjoy snow if Rohtang is closed. It is less crowded and offers serene snowy landscapes, perfect for photography and peaceful snow play.

The calmness of Gulaba makes it an ideal place to relax, have snowball fights, or simply soak in the beauty of the snow-covered surroundings. It’s also a great spot for nature lovers who prefer quieter locations.

Hamta Pass

Hamta Pass is an excellent location for finding snow in April-May for trek lovers. The scenic view of this trek offers tremendous peaks covered in snow, verdant meadows, and thrilling landscapes.

For adventure seekers in search of the snow, Hamta Pass could be an interesting destination. While traversing dense forests, crossing rivers, and walking on snowy fields, one will surely love this trek experience. Breathtaking views of the pass become a great deal for most of the trekkers.

Sissu

On the other side of the Atal Tunnel, Sissu is very accessible even when Rohtang Pass is

closed. Beautiful snow-covered mountains and frozen waterfalls and breathtaking valleys in the distant make this a hidden jewel for those who seek it out.

Atal Tunnel allows one to reach Sissu quickly from Manali, and the scene through the tunnel is an adventure by itself. Sissu makes for the most serene environment for those looking to escape crowds.

Travel Tips for Finding Snow in Manali

Always check on the latest weather conditions before planning snow trips. Weather changes very fast in mountains, so stay prepared and avoid unexpected road closures or travel delays.

Carry Warm Clothes:

Even in April-May, the higher altitude is quite cold. Wear layers, including thermal wear, jackets, gloves, and woolen caps. Dressing in layers allows one to adjust clothing based on how the temperature may change during the day.

Hire a Local Driver:

Mountain roads can be pretty tricky. Having a local driver who knows the routes is essential for a safe journey. The local drivers are well-versed with the terrain and can tackle difficult roads, especially when snowing.

Book in Advance:

The snow destinations, Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley, get pretty crowded in May. So, it is best to book your permits and accommodations in advance. Not only does this save you from last-minute hassles, but you will also get the best places to stay.

Rent Snow Gear:

If you have no snow gears, you can rent snow boots, jackets, and equipment at Manali or near the points of snowfall. Renting gear is much cheaper and does not burden your luggage with weighty items for your journey.
