Planning to travel to Manali in April-May was one of the best decisions I ever made. The snow was melting, the weather was ideal—not too cold, not too warm—and the scenery was like a postcard.
If you are planning to go to Manali during this time, here’s a simple guide based on my experience to plan your trip.
Why Go to Manali in April-May?
April and May are perfect as the winter chill has gone away, but there is still snow in higher areas such as Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley.
The roads are open, so you can enjoy snow activities and good weather for sightseeing. This is also the time when flowers start blooming, and the valleys are full of colorful hues.
The rivers are full of crystal clear water as a result of the melting snow, so it is an ideal time for nature enthusiasts and photographers to enjoy great views.
1. How to Go to Manali

The nearest airport is Bhuntar, which is 50 km from Manali. The flights can be expensive and sometimes are delayed because of the weather.
From Bhuntar, you can travel by taxi, which will cost you around INR 1,000-1,500, or a local bus for a lower price.
The flight time from Delhi is approximately 1.5 hours, saving a lot of time if you want convenience over cost.

I traveled by Volvo bus from Delhi. It was comfortable and cost approximately INR 1,200-1,500 per head.
The journey is long (12-14 hours), but the scenery is beautiful, especially as you climb up the winding mountain roads.
The buses depart in the evening, so you get to sleep most of the way and wake up in the lovely hills.

If you like road journeys, driving from Delhi or Chandigarh is an adventure. The distance from Delhi is around 540 km, and the journey takes around 12-14 hours, depending on halts.
You can halt at good places like Murthal (for parathas), Mandi, and Kullu for quick halts. Just prepare yourself for winding mountain roads that require careful driving.
2. Where to Stay in Manali:
There are numerous options to stay, ranging from budget hostels to luxury resorts:
