Is Sissu Open for Tourists After Recent Heavy Snowfall? (October 2025 Live

This year’s first major snowfall has hit Himachal’s Lahaul Valley, and it never fails to amaze – Sissu and Atal Tunnel, and the surrounding areas near Keylong, are transformed into a completely different place every winter with snow.

With snowfall comes the same questions filled with concern:

Is Sissu open to tourists right now? Are the roads safe? Is this a good week to plan a trip or should we wait for a few days?

This is your complete on-ground update – made by all possible local sources, weather updates and travelers who have recently been there.

Fresh Snow Blankets Sissu & Lahaul Valley

Earlier this week, a new western disturbance arrived in Himachal, which brought rain in lower valleys और snowfall above 8,000 ft.

  • From the early morning periods light to moderate snow has been reported in the Sissu, Koksar and Keylong areas.
  • Temperatures in the valley have decreased to near –1°C to 0°C — which also means that snow patches are appearing and forming on the mountain roads.
  • According to the most recent advisory from IMD (October 6–7, 2025), additional light snow spells are expected in the next 48 hours.

Local drivers are confirming that Sissu’s completely white mountain slopes have set in — a first significant sign that winter has arrived in Himachal.

Atal Tunnel to Sissu Route — Open, But Drive With Caution.

The Manali–Atal Tunnel–Sissu road, as of October 7, 2025, is officially permitted for light vehicles.

The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has advised motorists to drive before 4:00 PM and restrain night driving.

  • Surface:  Reduce your speed, as surface conditions were wet, and partially frozen near Sissu village.
  • Visibility: Visibility was moderate in the morning, and low in snow/fog.
  • Traffic: Traffic was intermittent; in fact, some tourists were turned around yesterday because conditions dropped after lunch.

If planning to drive, please:

  • Carry snow chains, or rent 4×4 vehicles if possible.
  • Refrain from unnecessary stops in close proximity to bends, or slopes.
  • Follow Lahaul & Spiti Police Twitter, or the district administration page for updates.

Long story short: Yes, Sissu is open — but only for adventurous people.

How Heavy Was the Snowfall in Sissu?

According to the locals, about 2–3 inches of snow have already settled near Sissu bridge and on the surrounding ridges.

While not unmanageable, there appears to be enough to transform the valley into a true postcard scene, with the roofs white, frozen waterfalls, and glittery peaks visible from the north portal of Atal Tunnel.

Tourists arriving from Manali stopped for some quick photo sessions, then returned at about 5:00 PM when the temperatures dropped significantly before sunset.

“We saw light snow near the lake and flurries while driving down from the tunnel — it felt like entering another world,”
says Mehak, a tourist from Delhi who visited yesterday.

What About Kaza and Spiti?

As a result of heavy snowfall, the Manali-Kaza route through Kunzum Pass is closed beyond Losar.

Locally registered 4×4 vehicles and BRO (Border Roads Organization) vehicles are the only ones allowed to go beyond Kunzum.

The Shimla-Kaza route is still open for now and people should not expect any major blockade in Kaza, Tabo or Pin Valley, just some snow showers.

For snow lovers who are looking for snow without road trouble in their vehicles. Sissu and Keylong are the best options so far.

Traveler Updates & On-Ground Reports

In the last 24 hours:

  • Travelers crossing in from Manali are reported to likely have experienced fresh snow on the north side of the Atal Tunnel.
  • Several tourist cabs were turned back owing to fog and slippery conditions near Koksar.
  • Homestay owners in Sissu confirmed that the power cuts and cold winds have really affected business, with very limited guests attending.

Photos and short videos of Sissu’s first snowfall 2025 are already on a viral streak on Instagram — particularly reels adorned with #SissuSnowfall #AtalTunnelLive #TravelCoffeeTrips.

Safety Tips Before You Head to Sissu

If you are thinking about seeing the snow this week, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Check the weather hour by hour — the conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
  • Leave Manali early (by 8 AM) in case you want to return before dark.
  • Dress in layers and have gloves and waterproof shoes.
  • एक ले लो thermos of hot tea or coffee, snacks, and a power bank just in case — small shops may be closed during snow.
  • Let your hotel or travel operator know your return plans.

If you are unsure about driving in snow, join a guided snow tour or have a chauffeur take you — they have more experience driving on curves and icy patches.

When Will Roads Fully Clear?

Based on prior experience, the Atal Tunnel – Sissu stretch usually returns to normal within 2-3 days after at least light snowfall has occurred and the BRO has plowed the road.

There are indications that heavier snow may come later this week, and if so, it is reasonable to expect short closures (2–6 hours) to clear the roads.

The good news — so far we do not have a long-term closure on the road.

That means — it may still be possible to do your snow trip as long as you are prepared and time it correctly.

Final Verdict: Sissu Is Open

Sissu is now open for tourists after the snowfall, with even the early visitors describing it as “mini Switzerland.”

As tempted as we are, we still do NOT recommend you take your chance this weekend. If you are coming from Chandigarh , Delhi , or Mumbai, plan to come after the weather clears in a few days (could be as soon as 3–4).
