Last updated: 14 July 2026
Current ground status: Rohtang Pass is open for tourists with a valid permit.
Rohtang Pass is one of the most popular high-altitude passes in Himachal Pradesh, located near Manali and taking its name from a local legend, means ‘Height of Rohtang Pass ‘. The road is at an elevation of around 3,980 meters.
Each year, the pass attracts thousands of tourists and adventure seekers because of its vast landscape which includes glaciers and snow-capped mountains.
Yet somehow, the status of Rohtang is still very weather dependent: summers provide an opportunity to cross it while winters close it completely due to snow fall.
As you plan to go to Rohtang Pass, you might be wondering what the status is in July, in terms of being open. How is the state of the roads? What permits are required?
To help you confidently plan your trip, let’s summarize everything you need to know about the Rohtang Pass Tour Package in July, including road conditions and traveling tips.
In July, is Rohtang Pass open?

Yes. As of 14 July 2026, Rohtang Pass is open for tourists, and the official online permit system is active.
Tourist vehicles are travelling from Manali towards Rohtang Pass through Gulaba and Marhi. However, vehicle movement remains dependent on the weather and instructions from the local police.
July is a monsoon month, so rain, fog, falling stones or temporary road maintenance can occasionally cause delays. Travellers should confirm the same-day road status with their taxi driver before leaving Manali.
July Weather and Road Conditions

मौसम
July is part of the monsoon season in Manali. The weather around रोहतांग दर्रा can change quickly between sunshine, clouds, fog and rain. Mornings usually offer better visibility, while fog and showers are more likely later in the day. Carry a waterproof jacket and confirm the latest weather conditions before leaving Manali.
Conditions of the Roads
The Manali to Rohtang Pass road is currently motorable for permitted tourist vehicles. Travellers may experience wet road surfaces, fog, water flowing across some sections and traffic congestion around Gulaba, Marhi and Rahni Nallah.
The official permit portal is not currently showing a fixed weekly maintenance closure. However, temporary restrictions may be introduced because of rainfall, road repairs or safety concerns. Check the official permit portal before travelling.
Current Snow Status at Rohtang Pass in July 2026
Some old snow patches may still be visible around the higher Rohtang Pass area. However, deep snow, large snow walls and snow activities are not guaranteed in mid July.
The amount of snow changes quickly because of rain and warmer daytime temperatures. Visitors should ask their driver for the same-morning snow update before booking the trip. The main July attractions are green mountains, waterfalls, mist and panoramic views.
Requirements for Permits

Rohtang Pass requires a permit to enter. The government of Himachal Pradesh issues permits that allow a certain number of vehicles daily both to minimize the amount of human traffic and to minimize impact on the delicate ecosystem.
The daily permit quota is 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles. For cars, jeeps and MUVs, the permit fee is ₹500 and the congestion charge is ₹50. The total government charge is ₹550. Apply through the official portal at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in
Important points to merit:
- Permits are first come, first served.
- Carry a valid ID, vehicle registration details, valid Pollution Under Control certificate and a printed copy of the permit.
- If you are only going to cross the Atal Tunnel towards Lahaul-Spiti (without turning left to Rohtang top), you do not need a permit.
How to Take a Taxi or Drive to Rohtang Pass

By Car or Taxi
Most tourists book an authorised local taxi from Manali. Before confirming the booking, ask the operator whether the Rohtang permit and congestion charge are included in the quoted price. Private vehicles must obtain the required online permit before crossing the Gulaba barrier.
By Bus
Seasonal bus services may operate from Manali towards Rohtang Pass when road and weather conditions allow. Bus timings, availability and the permitted sightseeing point can change during the monsoon. Confirm the current service directly at the Manali bus stand one day before travelling.
Travel Advice for July Visits to Rohtang

Start early- You will want to leave Manali between 4 or 5 AM to evade both traffic and areas susceptible to landslides
Pack Wisely – Consider a basic medical kit, gloves, sunglasses, warm layers, waterproof boots, and a rain poncho
Check for updates- Before you set out, confirm the road status on the Himachal tourism department’s page, and search weather updates.
Stay flexible- Add a few buffer days to your itinerary, as landslides or traffic jams can significantly delay you.
Altitude preparedness- Rohtang has been known to cause mild altitude sickness at areas near 4,000 meters. Make sure you drink lots of water, and avoid anything that requires physical exertion once you arrive.
Other Options If Rohtang Is Closed

The Atal Tunnel, which bypasses the old Rohtang route, allows you to travel to Lahaul-Spiti in the event that Rohtang is suddenly closed due to landslides or extreme weather.
This 9-kilometer tunnel allows for year-round travel, through rain or snow, between Manali and Sissu and Keylong if you plan to venture beyond Manali, it would be a good alternate.
