Rohtang Pass Road Status 2026: Is Rohtang Open Today?

The honest truth about Rohtang Pass road status is that nobody can promise you it will be open on any single day. Snow shuts it. Rain shuts it. A landslide shuts it. A police order shuts it. Even on a clear morning, the permit portal can run out of slots before you finish your chai.

We run trips out of Manali every season, and the one mistake we see again and again is travellers paying a cab advance for Rohtang without checking if the road is actually open that day. Then the road closes and the money is gone.

This guide gives you the real picture. How to check the rohtang pass road status in three minutes, the official permit link, the fees, the timings, the snow points, and what to do when Rohtang says no.

Quick Answer: Is Rohtang Pass Open Today?

Rohtang Pass status changes fast. Snow, rain, landslides, police orders, and permit availability can all close it within hours, even when Manali town looks sunny.

The safest way to know if Rohtang is open today is to check the official permit portal first, then confirm with a local driver or hotel before you pay any cab advance.

Do not trust a random “Rohtang is open” message from a tout. Verify the permit, then verify the weather.

Today’s Rohtang Pass Road Status 2026

During our research on 26 May 2026, one live road-status source listed Manali to Rohtang Pass as Open, 4×4 vehicle only.

We mark this for a reason. Final access depends on official permit availability and whatever the local police or administration decide that morning. A source can say open while the barrier stays shut.

Here is what “open” actually means, because the word hides four very different situations.

Seasonally open means the snow clearance is done and the road can technically be used. It does not mean tourists can drive up.

Open for local traffic means residents and supply vehicles can pass, but tourist cabs may still be held back.

Open for 4×4 only means there is enough snow, slush, or loose surface that authorities want high-clearance vehicles with proper grip. A normal hatchback gets turned away.

Open for tourist vehicles with permit is the full green light. This is the only status where you, in a booked cab with a valid permit, actually reach Rohtang top.

If you want the full destination breakdown, our Rohtang Pass guide covers height, distance, and what to expect at the top.

How to Check Rohtang Pass Status in 3 Minutes

In our experience, three quick checks tell you almost everything.

First, check the official permit portal

If permits are open for your date, the tourist road is usually running. But permit availability alone does not guarantee the road. Weather can still close it.

Second, ask someone on the ground

Your hotel reception, your driver, or our Manali team will know what happened on the road that morning. Locals hear about closures before any website updates.

Third, check fresh weather

This matters most after snow, rain, or an afternoon storm. A blue-sky Manali morning means nothing for what is happening 50 km up at the pass.

Do not skip the third step. The portal can show permits available while a snowstorm is closing the top.

Official Rohtang Permit 2026 Link and Rules

The official permit link is https://rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in/

The older rohtangpermits.nic.in domain now points users to the newer hp.gov.in site. If you land on the old one, you will get redirected, so use the hp.gov.in link directly.

You need a permit for any tourist vehicle going to Rohtang Pass. No permit, no crossing.

To apply, keep these ready: a valid ID proof, a valid PUC certificate, your vehicle registration date, and your full vehicle details.

The permit printout is compulsory. Carry a physical copy, do not rely on a phone screen at the barrier.

One thing trips people up. If the vehicle details on your permit do not match your valid proofs, the vehicle may not be allowed to cross the barrier. Double-check every digit of the registration number before you submit.

How Much Does the Rohtang Permit 2026 Cost?

The fees are simple once you split them by vehicle type.

For a car or jeep, the permit fee is ₹500 and the congestion charge is ₹50. That comes to ₹550.

For an MUV, it is the same. Permit fee ₹500, congestion charge ₹50, total ₹550.

For buses and HMV, the permit fee is ₹500 but the congestion charge is ₹100, so it works out higher than the car rate.

So for most cars, jeeps, and MUVs you are looking at ₹550. Just remember this does not apply to buses.

You pay all of this online on the permit portal. There is no cash counter for the permit itself.

Rohtang Permit Timings and Daily Vehicle Limit

There is a daily cap, and it fills up. The limit is 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles per day.

Permits release in two slots. The first is at 10:00 hrs, with 200 diesel and 400 petrol permits. The second is at 16:00 hrs, again with 200 diesel and 400 petrol permits.

You can only apply for the next 2 days from the current date. So you cannot lock a permit weeks in advance.

There is also a per-vehicle cap. Only 3 permits can be taken for each vehicle in a week, counted Tuesday to Monday. If you are doing multiple Manali trips, plan around this.

Is Rohtang Pass Closed on Tuesday?

This one needs honesty because the sources disagree.

Many travel blogs and older road-status pages say Rohtang stays closed every Tuesday for maintenance. This was true for several seasons.

But during our research, the official portal showed the maintenance day as “No Vehicles are allowed on NONE.” That suggests no fixed weekly closure at the time we checked.

Do not build your trip around it either way.

The practical advice: do not keep Tuesday as your only Rohtang day unless both the permit portal and your local driver confirm it is running. Keep a backup day in your plan.

We broke down the early-season picture in our Rohtang Pass in April-May guide if you want the month-specific view.

Rohtang Pass Snow Point Today: Rohtang, Gulaba, and Marhi

Snow status shifts by month and by how far up the road is open.

Early in the season, the better snow usually sits around Marhi, Rani Nala, and Rohtang top, but only when the upper road is actually open.

If the upper road is closed, authorities may let tourists go only up to Gulaba or Marhi, depending on what is safe that day.

Here is the warning we give every group. Around 23 May 2026, a report said tourists and taxis got caught in a sudden Rohtang snowstorm. The weather up there turned while Manali below looked fine.

So do not trust a clear sky in Manali town. The pass makes its own weather, and it changes in minutes.

Which Snow Point Is Open If Rohtang Is Closed?

When Rohtang shuts, you still have options for snow.

Gulaba works when the road is open only to the lower points. It is the first proper stop and often the fallback when the top is closed.

Marhi opens up when authorities allow partial upper access. It sits higher than Gulaba and usually has better snow.

If both are off, your Plan B is Solang Valley, Sethan, or Sissu via the Atal Tunnel. Which one you get depends on weather and how police are managing movement that day.

We listed every reliable backup in our guide on where to find snow in Manali in April-May, which is handy when the top is shut.

Best Time to Leave Manali for Rohtang

Leave Manali around 5:00 to 6:00 AM in peak season. We tell every traveller this and the ones who listen always have the better day.

Traffic builds fast after sunrise near Solang, the Gulaba checkpost, and the narrow upper stretches. A 6 AM start can mean a clear run. A 9 AM start can mean a two-hour crawl.

Afternoon weather is the other reason. It often turns cloudy, windy, rainy, or snowy past midday. The earlier you reach the top and start back, the safer you are.

Manali to Rohtang Taxi Fare in 2026

Taxi rates for Rohtang are all over the place, so confirm the price before you pay anything.

For a hatchback or small car, sources show roughly ₹3,999 to ₹6,500. For a sedan or SUV, sources show roughly ₹4,999 to ₹10,000, sometimes including the permit, sometimes not.

That permit question is the catch. Some quotes bundle the permit, some add it later. Always ask whether the fare includes the permit before you agree.

Weekends, peak season, the 4×4-only requirement, and snow-chain conditions can all push the price up. A snow day costs more than a clear day.

Here is a money tip most agents will not volunteer. Decide the full price, permit included or excluded, in writing before you sit in the car. We have seen too many travellers argue about an extra ₹550 at Gulaba because nobody mentioned the permit upfront.

If you would rather skip the haggling, our Rohtang Pass tour packages include a verified cab and the permit logistics handled for you.

Can Private Cars Go to Rohtang Pass?

Yes, private cars can go, but only if the tourist permit is available and all your documents are valid.

You need a valid ID proof, a valid PUC certificate, your vehicle registration details, and the compulsory permit printout.

The official portal also asks for the vehicle registration date and notes that the vehicle age should not be more than 10 years. If your car is older, check this carefully before planning.

Any extra rule beyond these, such as fuel-type restrictions on a given day, should be confirmed locally, since these can change with admin orders.

Rohtang Pass vs Atal Tunnel: Which Route Should You Take Today?

These two serve different purposes, so the right answer depends on what you want.

Rohtang Pass

It is the scenic high-pass experience with the big snow walls. It is what most people picture when they think of snow near Manali.

Atal Tunnel

It is the practical route into Lahaul. It is 9.02 km long and runs right under Rohtang Pass on the Manali-Leh Highway. You take it to reach Sissu, Keylong, and the rest of Lahaul quickly.

During our research, the official Lahaul-Spiti road status listed Manali to Keylong as open, Keylong to Kaza as closed, and Keylong to Leh as open. So the tunnel side was running into Lahaul, but the Spiti link was not.

If Rohtang is shut or 4×4-only and you just want snow and a good day out, the tunnel to Sissu is often the smarter call. We compared both fully in our Rohtang Pass or Atal Tunnel guide.

What to Do If Rohtang Permits Are Sold Out

Permits run out, especially on weekends. Do not panic, you have moves.

Try the next permit slot, since the 16:00 hrs release opens a fresh batch. Or shift your Rohtang day by one and lock the permit early the next morning.

Ask your cab operator directly if the permit is included in their quote. Many handle the permit logistics themselves.

If nothing works, switch to the Atal Tunnel and Sissu, or head to Solang, Gulaba, Marhi if allowed, or Sethan for snow.

One note from traveller forums. On Reddit, people often say taxi drivers handle the Rohtang permit paperwork for them. That can be true, but still confirm the permit is genuinely included and the road is open before you pay.

Safety Tips for Rohtang Road

Carry warm layers even in summer. The top is freezing while Manali is warm, and people underdress every single day.

Pack waterproof shoes, sunglasses for the snow glare, offline maps, cash, water, snacks, and basic medicines for headache and nausea.

Do not stop for photos on blind bends. We have seen near-misses because someone parked on a curve for a snow selfie.

Watch for sudden fog, black ice, fresh snow, landslide risk, and low visibility. When the status says 4×4 only, take it seriously. It is not a marketing line, it means the surface genuinely needs grip.

If snow is your main goal and Rohtang looks unstable, our wider Himachal tour packages can build a flexible snow plan around the weather.

Month-by-Month Rohtang Road Status Pattern

March is usually closed. Your snow options are Solang, Gulaba, Sissu, and Sethan. We covered this in detail in our Is Rohtang Pass open in March guide.

April is mostly closed or only partly open, so keep expectations low and plans flexible.

May is uncertain early and better late. The first weeks can go either way, the last weeks improve.

June is the best month for snow, but it is also the most crowded. Expect queues at every checkpost.

July and August bring rain and landslide disruption. The road can close on short notice during heavy spells.

September clears up with better views and thinner crowds. A quietly good month.

October and November bring fresh snow and rising closure risk as the season ends. Our Rohtang Pass in October guide explains the late-season risk.

Suggested One-Day Plan If Rohtang Is Open

Start from Manali by 5:30 AM. Drive up past Gulaba, which a road-status source places about 23 km from Manali.

Continue to Marhi, listed as about 17 km before Rohtang, for a tea and snow stop.

If allowed, cross Rani Nala and push to Rohtang top. Spend your time there in the morning while the weather is calm.

Start back before the afternoon weather worsens. If your driver confirms it is permitted and safe, you can return via Koksar, Sissu, and the Atal Tunnel for a fuller loop.

Suggested Backup Plan If Rohtang Is Closed

Do not waste the day. Start with Solang Valley, then Gulaba or Marhi if they are open.

Take the Atal Tunnel across to Sissu for snow and that lovely waterfall view, then keep a relaxed Manali evening for cafes and the market.

The mindset we push with our travellers: treat Rohtang as a bonus in unstable weather, not the only reason you came to Manali. Plan a great day that works even if the pass says no.

Final Advice Before Booking Your Rohtang Cab

Do not book a cab just because someone tells you Rohtang is open. We hear that line every season, and it is wrong as often as it is right.

Before you pay, confirm five things: permit availability, road status, vehicle type allowed that day, the weather, and whether the fare includes the permit.

Get those five right and Rohtang is one of the best days you will have near Manali. Get them wrong and you lose money on a closed road.

If you want us to check today’s status and sort a clean cab-and-permit plan, message our Manali Tour Planner team on WhatsApp. We drive this road every season and we would rather help you plan it right than watch you gamble on it.
