Most people think Suraj Tal Lake is a separate trip you plan and chase. It is not.
It sits right on the Manali-Leh highway, just below बारालाचा ला, and you see it from the road as you climb towards the pass.
The catch is simple. If the Baralacha stretch is closed, you cannot reach Suraj Tal at all. The lake and the road open and shut together.
We have sent travellers up this route every season, and the single biggest mistake is treating Suraj Tal like a casual day picnic from Manali. It sits at around 16,000 ft. That is serious altitude.
This guide tells you exactly how to reach it, when to go, where to stay, and how to do it safely.
Quick Answer: Is Suraj Tal Lake Worth Visiting In 2026?
Yes, Suraj Tal Lake is worth it if the Baralacha road is open. It is a high-altitude lake just below बारालाचा ला on the Manali-Leh highway.
The most reliable months are June to September, with July to September giving you the cleaner blue-water views.
For most travellers, जिस्पा is the best overnight base. It is close, calmer, and far more practical than rushing up and down from Manali in one shot.

Where Is Suraj Tal Lake Located?

Suraj Tal is in Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh, sitting just below बारालाचा ला on the Manali-Leh highway.
You will also see it written as Surya Taal या Tso Kamtsi. Same lake, different names depending on which signboard or map you read.
Almost everyone visits it along the Manali-Leh highway, not as a long separate detour. The lake comes to you as you drive up towards Baralacha, so you are not going out of your way.
Suraj Tal is linked with the भागा नदी. The Bhaga and the Chandra meet at Tandi to form the Chandrabhaga, which becomes the Chenab further downstream.
Manali To Suraj Tal Distance From Baralacha, Jispa And Keylong

Suraj Tal sits very close to the top. It is only around 2 to 3 km from Baralacha La, so once you are near the pass, the lake is right there.
हम जिस्पा, it is around 49 km. From केलांग, it is around 65 to 71 km [VERIFY], depending on which map source you trust.
The full Manali to Suraj Tal distance is around 140 to 142 km via the अटल टनल. Via the older Rohtang route it stretches to around 185 to 187 km.
The exact number shifts a little by route and map source, so treat these as close estimates, not stopwatch figures.
If you want someone to handle the driver, stays, and routing, our मनाली टूर पैकेज come with a local team that actually knows these roads.
How To Reach Suraj Tal From Manali

The route is long but straightforward. You leave Manali, pass the Solang side, and go through the अटल टनल to drop into Lahaul.
From there it runs through सिस्सू, then Tandi, then केलांग, then जिस्पा, then Darcha, then Zingzing Bar, and finally up to Suraj Tal just before बारालाचा ला.
A Manali day trip is possible now that the Atal Tunnel cuts out the old Rohtang crawl. But it is still a long, high-altitude drive.
Do not treat this like ordinary local sightseeing. You are climbing from Manali’s height all the way to around 16,000 ft and back in a single day. Your body feels it.
In our experience, travellers who break the journey enjoy the lake far more than those who rush both ways. If you want to halt early in Lahaul, read our best Sissu 3-day itinerary for a comfortable first stop after the tunnel.
How To Visit Suraj Tal From Jispa

For most travellers, जिस्पा is the smarter base. It is closer to the lake, calmer at night, and easier on your body than pushing all the way from Manali.
Stay in Jispa, sleep well, and leave early the next morning. An early start matters here because weather and water crossings get worse as the day heats up.
If road conditions allow, stop at Deepak Tal on the way. Then reach Suraj Tal, spend a short while, continue briefly to बारालाचा ला for the views, and turn back.
What we always tell our travellers is to be off Baralacha and heading down before early afternoon. The streams near the top swell with snowmelt as the sun climbs, and a crossing that was easy at 8 AM can get tricky by noon.

Can You Stop At Suraj Tal Lake?

Yes, you can usually stop briefly. The lake is right along the highway, so you do not need a special trek to see it.
But keep it sensible. Do not park in a way that blocks traffic on the narrow road, and do not walk down the loose, sliding slopes near the water for a “closer” shot.
Do not linger too long either. You are at around 16,000 ft, and standing around in thin, cold air for an hour is how altitude headaches start.
Take your photos from the safe roadside viewpoints. The view from there is already excellent, and it keeps you out of trouble.
Suraj Tal Lake Best Time To Visit In 2026

Late May
It is possible only if Baralacha has been cleared. Even then, the lake may still be frozen or partly frozen, so manage your expectations.
जून
It gives you snow views and a partial thaw. The surrounding peaks still hold plenty of white, and the lake starts opening up.
July, August and September
They are the best stretch. The water turns clearer and bluer, and access is far more reliable across these months.
अक्टूबर
It can turn risky fast. Cold deepens, black ice forms on the road, and an early snowfall can shut Baralacha without much warning.
Most tourists chase the blue-water photos they see online and book for late May, then arrive to find a frozen lake and snow walls. If clear blue water is what you want, aim for July to September.
Is Suraj Tal Open In 2026? Road Status And Baralacha Update

Suraj Tal opens and closes with the बारालाचा ला stretch of the Manali-Leh highway. They are the same gate.
Here is what we know for 2026. BRO officially reopened the Manali-Leh highway on May 12, 2026, after snow-clearance work began on March 27 and took 42 days. Civilian traffic was expected after trial runs.
द्वारा May 14, 2026, the Darcha-Sarchu stretch via Baralacha had reopened for light motor vehicles. Heavy vehicle movement was expected after further monitoring.
That is good news, but it does not mean the road stays perfect. Always verify same-week road conditions before you leave, because a late snowfall or a swollen stream can change things overnight.
If you want to base your trip in the Lahaul Valley first, our Keylong travel guide from Manali covers the full Atal Tunnel to Keylong stretch.
What Is Suraj Tal Like In Snow?

In late May and early June, Suraj Tal can look raw. You might see it frozen, partly frozen, or ringed by tall snow walls left behind by the road clearing.
This is a different lake from the bright blue water in the popular photos. Early season is about ice, white slopes, and a stark, empty landscape.
Those glowing blue-water shots usually come from the more stable summer months, when the ice has melted and the water settles.
If you go early, go for the snow drama, not the postcard blue. They are two completely different experiences of the same lake.
Photography Guide For Suraj Tal Lake

Suraj Tal sits in a wide, open bowl, so wide-angle frames work best. You can fit the lake, the road, and the surrounding ridges in one shot.
The road-and-lake composition is the classic one here. Stand at a safe roadside spot and let the highway lead the eye towards the water.
On a calm morning, the lake throws clean reflections of the peaks. Wind kills this fast, so the early hours are your best chance before the breeze picks up.
In early season, frame the snow walls against the lake for that stark, dramatic look. From July to September, focus on the lake colour, which deepens into proper blue.
One firm rule from our team. Do not climb down the loose scree near the water for a risky angle. The slope slides easily and there is no quick help up there.
Is Suraj Tal Safe For Families, Kids And First-Time Travellers?

I will be honest with you. Suraj Tal is beautiful, but it is high, cold, remote, and thin-air territory.
At around 16,000 ft, AMS (altitude mountain sickness) is a real risk. Add biting cold wind, very limited help nearby, patchy or absent mobile network, and weather that flips quickly.
Families can visit, but only when the road is open and the weather is stable. Even then, keep the lake stop short and base yourself lower down in जिस्पा या केलांग.
For young kids or older family members, watch closely for headaches, nausea, or breathlessness. If anyone struggles, do not tough it out at the top. Drive back down to lower altitude.
Where To Stay Near Suraj Tal: Why Jispa Is Best

There are no proper hotels at Suraj Tal Lake itself. Nobody stays at the lake. You stay lower and drive up.
Your real options are जिस्पा, केलांग, Darcha, Zingzing Bar, और Sarchu. They are not equal.
We recommend जिस्पा for most travellers. It has better stay options and is far more comfortable than the very high, very basic camps further up.
केलांग is the other solid base. It is a proper town with more services, and it works well if Jispa is full.
Darcha and Zingzing Bar are basic and seasonal. Sarchu sits very high and is best left to people already deep into a Leh road trip. For curated stays and routing, check our स्पीति घाटी समूह भ्रमण पैकेज.
Food, Fuel, Mobile Network, Entry Fee And Permits

There are no food shops at the lake. Carry your own water and snacks, because once you leave Jispa you are on your own for hours.
Basic food may be available at seasonal stops around Darcha, जिस्पा, या Zingzing Bar, but this depends entirely on the month and whether the dhabas have opened for the season.
Plan your fuel carefully. The last petrol pump is Tandi, so fill up there and do not gamble on finding fuel beyond it.
यह last ATM and hospital are in Keylong. Carry enough cash before you go higher, because cards and UPI mean nothing up here.
Mobile network is unreliable or absent near Suraj Tal. One source names Darcha as the last point you can expect a signal, so tell someone your plan before you lose connection.
There is usually no entry fee for Suraj Tal. No special Suraj Tal permit is normally required when travelling along the Manali-Leh highway. If you take the older Rohtang route, check the Rohtang-side permit rules separately.
Suggested Itineraries For Suraj Tal Lake

One Day Manali To Suraj Tal And Baralacha
This is possible, but it is tiring. You drive from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, push all the way up to Suraj Tal and Baralacha, and come back the same day.
Do this only when the road is open, the weather is clear, and you are comfortable with long mountain drives. It is a big day at high altitude with almost no buffer.
Two Days Manali, Jispa, Suraj Tal And Baralacha
This is the plan we recommend for most travellers. On दिन 1, drive from Manali to Jispa through the Atal Tunnel and Sissu, and rest.
On दिन 2, leave Jispa early, reach Suraj Tal and Baralacha La, spend a short while, and return. Your body gets a night to adjust, and the day feels relaxed instead of rushed.
Suraj Tal As Part Of A Manali To Leh Road Trip
If you are doing the full Manali to Leh run, Suraj Tal is a natural stop between जिस्पा और Sarchu. You pass it anyway.
Keep the stop short. Altitude climbs quickly after Jispa, and a long halt here can leave you light-headed for the rest of the day. Want help building the full route? See our Spiti Valley destination guide or call our team and we will plan it around real road conditions.
Suraj Tal, Baralacha, Deepak Tal And Chandratal: What Is The Difference?
People mix these up all the time, so let me sort it out.
Deepak Tal

It comes first as you drive up from the Manali side. It is a smaller lake you pass before reaching Suraj Tal.
Suraj Tal

It sits higher up, just below बारालाचा ला. It is the one this whole guide is about.
Chandratal

It is a completely different lake. It belongs to the wider Lahaul-Spiti circuit and is reached via Kunzum Pass, not Baralacha.
If you are also eyeing Chandratal, browse our Chandratal tour packages for camping and full-circuit options with verified stays.
Final Local Advice Before You Go
Do not chase Suraj Tal blindly from Manali without checking the Baralacha road status first. The whole trip hangs on that one stretch being open.
Base yourself in जिस्पा and start early. The mornings are calmer, the streams are lower, and the light on the lake is better.
Pack warm layers even if Manali was sunny. At 16,000 ft, the wind cuts straight through anything light.
Carry snacks and water, fill fuel at Tandi, and keep the lake stop short. See it, photograph it from a safe spot, breathe it in, and head back down before the weather turns.
The lake is genuinely worth the effort. You just have to respect the altitude and the road, and let us help if you want it sorted properly. If you want more ideas around Lahaul, read our best things to do in Sissu.
