Best Time to Visit Chandratal Lake
Planning a trip to Chandratal is not the same as booking a weekend hill station getaway. The altitude, the road conditions, and the remoteness require a team that genuinely understands the terrain. Here is what sets our Chandratal tour packages apart.
| Window | Condition | के लिए सर्वोत्तम |
|---|---|---|
| Late June to Early July | Roads begin to open but remain unstable. Camps may still be setting up and routes can change suddenly due to weather. | Flexible, experienced travellers who can handle uncertainty |
| जुलाई से अगस्त | Most reliable period with operational camps and stable routes, though August may bring occasional rain delays. | First-time travellers and those seeking a smooth trip |
| सितम्बर | Clear skies, golden light, and peak scenic beauty with camps starting to close toward month-end. | Photographers and repeat travellers |
| Early October | Season ending with shutting camps, sharp temperature drop, and risk of sudden snowfall blocking roads. | Well-prepared travellers with flexible plans |

Altitude Gain
Chandigarh sits at around 300 metres. Chandratal is at 4,300 metres. On the short Manali route, this jump happens within 2 days of driving, which is fast. Altitude sickness symptoms (headache, nausea, breathlessness) are possible for anyone. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on the way up, walk slowly at the campsite, and give your body time.
Road Conditions
The stretch from Gramphu to Chandratal is rough. Water crossings, broken surfaces, and steep sections are standard. A capable driver and the right vehicle make this manageable. Oxygen support is carried in our private vehicles and is charged only if used.
Cold Nights
Even in peak summer, temperatures at the Chandratal campsite drop to 2 to 5 degrees Celsius. Warm layers, thermals, and a good sleeping bag are not optional for the camping night.
Who Should Plan a Longer Trip
Travellers over 55 years should consider a 5 day trip with a Lahaul halt instead of a compressed 4 day push. Families with children under 10 will find the altitude, cold, and basic camping facilities difficult, so a longer Spiti version may suit better. People with respiratory or cardiac conditions face real risk from rapid altitude gain and should consult their doctor before booking, and ideally choose the Shimla side circuit for gentler acclimatisation.
What Affects the Cost of Chandratal Tour Packages
Short Trip vs Full Circuit
A 4 to 5 day trip costs less than an 8 to 10 day circuit. More days mean more stays, more fuel, and more meals.
Private vs Group
A private vehicle with a dedicated itinerary costs more than a fixed departure group tour. Private trips offer flexibility, group trips offer savings.
Vehicle Type
A compact SUV for a couple costs differently from a larger vehicle for a family or a Tempo Traveller for a group of 8 to 12.
Camp and Stay Quality
Basic Chandratal camps are affordable. Better tents, warmer sleeping bags, and upgraded stays in Kaza or Manali raise the budget.
Best Places to Visit on a Chandratal Trip
A Chandratal tour is not just about the lake. The journey passes through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Indian Himalayas. Here are the places that make the experience complete.

चंद्रताल झील
At 4,300 metres, Chandratal sits in a natural amphitheatre of barren ridges. The lake is roughly one kilometre around, crescent shaped, and changes colour through the day. Mornings are usually still, with near perfect reflections of the surrounding peaks. The walk from camp is short but deeply memorable because the lake appears suddenly as you crest the final rise.

कुंजुम दर्रा
At roughly 4,590 metres, Kunzum La connects Lahaul to Spiti. A small temple marks the top. The pass offers wide views of snow covered ranges and valley systems on either side. Crossing Kunzum is a defining moment in any Chandratal or Spiti Valley itinerary.

Batal
Not a village so much as a collection of roadside shelters where travellers stop for tea. It sits at the junction between the Chandratal turnoff and the Kunzum route. The landscape is raw and glacial. Batal gives you a real sense of how remote this territory truly is.

सिस्सू
A green, relatively mild village in Lahaul Valley. Waterfalls, riverside views, and clean guesthouses make it a welcome rest point after the Atal Tunnel. Sissu works well as an acclimatisation stop before pushing to higher altitudes.

लोसर
The first village on the Spiti side after crossing Kunzum. The valley opens up, the terrain shifts from grey rock to sandy brown, and the distinct character of Spiti begins. For combined Chandratal and Spiti trips, Losar is the gateway between two very different worlds.

काजा
The administrative centre of Spiti Valley. Kaza offers fuel, ATMs (often unreliable), basic medical support, and guesthouses. It is also your base for visiting Key Monastery, Pin Valley, Hikkim, and Langza. Adding Kaza to a Chandratal trip brings cultural and spiritual depth to what is already a stunning road journey.

प्रमुख मठ
Perched on a hilltop above the Spiti River, Key is the largest monastery in Spiti. The layered white and ochre structure set against bare mountains is unforgettable. A visit brings spiritual and cultural texture to a Chandratal road trip.

अटल टनल
This 9.02 kilometre tunnel below Rohtang connects Manali to Lahaul year round, saving hours of driving on the old Rohtang Pass road. For Chandratal bound travellers starting from Manali, this is where the mountain journey truly begins.

जिस्पा
A small settlement along the Bhaga River in Lahaul. Jispa works well as an overnight stop with simple and pleasant riverside camps. Many of our itineraries use Jispa as a buffer halt for better acclimatisation.
Best Things to Do on a Chandratal Tour

Camp Under an Open Sky
A night at over 4,200 metres with nothing between you and a canopy of stars is the highlight of most Chandratal trips. The campsites are basic but the sky above them is anything but.

Watch Sunrise at the Lake
Reaching before dawn, when the water is perfectly still, gives you a view that very few places on earth can match. The colour shifts as sunlight touches the ridgelines are slow, quiet, and extraordinary.

Cross Kunzum Pass
Kunzum is one of the most exhilarating stretches in Himalayan travel — unpaved road, raw altitude, prayer flags in cold wind, and vast emptiness in every direction.

Photograph the Night Sky
With zero light pollution and thin high altitude atmosphere, Chandratal is one of the finest astrophotography locations in India. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on clear nights. Even a phone camera can capture the star density up here.

Combine With a Full Spiti Road Trip
Adding Chandratal to a Spiti Valley circuit gives you the lake, the monasteries, the fossil villages, and the cold desert in one continuous journey — which is why it remains our most popular package.

Trek the Rim Trail at Dusk
Walking the rocky path that circles the lake at dusk, the water shifts from turquoise to deep indigo as the peaks catch the last of the sun. Short as it is, it is one of those rare walks you do not forget.
अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
Are Chandratal Tour Packages from Chandigarh available throughout the year?
No. Chandratal Tour Packages run from late June to early October only. The road to the lake is closed by snow for the rest of the year. If you want a winter Spiti experience instead, our Winter Spiti Expedition runs separately with 4×4 logistics.
What is the best route for a Chandigarh to Chandratal via Manali trip?
For most travellers, the Manali route is the best short option. Chandigarh to Manali is a smooth highway drive of 7 to 8 hours, then onwards via the Atal Tunnel, Gramphu, and Batal to Chandratal. The full route is roughly 530 km one way, with the rough stretch only between Gramphu and the campsite.
How do I decide between the Manali route and the Shimla route?
Pick the Manali route if you have 4 to 5 days, want the lake as the primary experience, and don’t mind a fast altitude climb. Pick the Shimla side full Spiti circuit if you have 8 to 10 days, want gradual acclimatisation, and are interested in monasteries, villages, and the cultural side of the journey, not just the lake.
Is a 4 day trip from Chandigarh to Chandratal enough?
It is enough if you are physically fit, comfortable on long mountain roads, and don’t mind a fast altitude jump. For most travellers, a 5 day trip with a Sissu or Manali halt makes a noticeable difference. You arrive at the campsite rested instead of exhausted.
How are Chandratal tour packages from Chandigarh different from Delhi based packages?
You skip the overnight Volvo, you arrive at your mountain base hours earlier, and short trip formats like the 4 day version actually become realistic. Delhi to Chandratal in 4 days is rough on the body. Chandigarh to Chandratal in 4 days is practical for most fit travellers, and that single difference shapes the entire trip experience.
What is the best month for a Chandratal Lake trip from Chandigarh?
September is generally the best month, with clear skies, stable roads, golden light, and fewer crowds. July and August are reliable but can bring rain. Mid June and early October are shoulder windows that depend heavily on road conditions, so flexibility helps.
Is this trip safe for first time mountain travellers?
Yes, when planned properly. The biggest risks are altitude and rough roads, both of which are managed by adding the right halts, using a capable vehicle, and not pushing the trip into a 3 day version. We carry oxygen support in our private vehicles, charged only if used.
Which vehicle is best for a Chandratal trip from Chandigarh?
A high clearance SUV (Innova Crysta, Scorpio, Fortuner, XUV700, or similar) is the right choice. For groups of 8 or more, a Tempo Traveller works for the Manali leg, but the final Batal to Chandratal stretch usually needs a transfer to a smaller 4×4 or SUV. Sedans and hatchbacks are not suitable for the rough section.
Is camping included in a Chandratal camping package from Chandigarh?
Yes. Our standard Chandratal camping package from Chandigarh includes one night at the designated Chandratal camping zone (around 1.5 km from the lake) in twin or triple sharing Swiss tents with proper bedding, dinner, and breakfast. Camping at the lakeshore itself is not permitted by the Forest Department.
What if the Chandratal road is closed during my dates?
We adjust the trip to a Lahaul exploration instead. Sissu, Chatru, Jispa, and the Chandra Valley remain accessible and beautiful. We communicate any change in real time and don’t push the group towards a risky road just to include the lake.
Can I combine Chandratal with a full Spiti circuit?
Yes, this is one of our most popular formats. The 8 to 10 day full Spiti circuit takes you through Kinnaur, Spiti, the high villages around Kaza, the Kunzum crossing, and Chandratal as the finale before the Manali exit back to Chandigarh.
Do I need a permit if driving my own vehicle?
For Indian nationals, no special permit is required for the Manali to Chandratal route. For the Spiti circuit through Kinnaur, an Inner Line Permit may be required for foreign nationals at certain checkpoints, but Indian travellers are exempt for the standard route.
Are these trips good for couples?
Yes. The 4 to 5 day Manali route is genuinely one of the better short Himalayan getaways for couples in North India. Private cab, comfortable Manali stay, one camping night under the stars, sunrise at the lake. Compact, romantic, and unforgettable.
Are these trips suitable for families with children?
Children above 8 to 10 years generally handle this trip well, especially the 5 day version with a Sissu halt. Younger children find the altitude, the rough road, and the cold camping night difficult. For families with younger kids, a longer Spiti route with proper hotels in Kaza is a much better option.
What should I pack for Chandratal Tour Packages?
Thermals, fleece or wool layer, windproof jacket, warm cap, gloves, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, headlamp, water bottle, basic medication, personal toiletries, and government ID. A sleeping bag liner is recommended if you sleep cold at the camp. Carry ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 in cash for the trip.
