This pass goes by a few names. You will see it written as Shinku La या Shingo La too. It sits around 5,050 metres, which works out to about 16,580 ft according to available travel sources. That makes it higher than Baralacha.
It sits on the Darcha to Padum route, the new road that connects Lahaul to Zanskar. A rough route idea from Manali is Manali, Atal Tunnel, Keylong, Jispa or Darcha, Shinkula.
What the Shinkula Road Is Really Like
The Darcha to Shinkula section is no joke. Expect rough patches, steep climbs, and very limited facilities. This is not a road with dhabas every few kilometres.
A 4×4 or high-ground-clearance SUV is recommended when conditions are rough. In fact, the police advisory this season has at times allowed only 4×4 vehicles near Shinku La because of slippery snow and ice on the surface.
