Rohtang Pass had always been in my to-do list, and this year I finally got the chance to see it in April-May. If you’re heading there in April-May, read on what I experienced on my trip that would be useful for you.
Is Rohtang Pass Open in April-May?
When I landed in Manali in mid-April, I was looking forward to visiting Rohtang Pass. But to my surprise, I found out that the pass is normally closed in early April because of excessive snowfall.
The Border Roads Organization (BRO) keeps working day and night to clear the snow, but it tends to open only in mid-May. This can change from year to year according to the climate. Sometimes, the climate shifts suddenly and can postpone the opening further.
So, if you’re going there in April, be prepared for the fact that the pass can still be closed, and always check with the local authorities for the latest update.
Do You Need Permits?
Yes, you certainly do need a permit to visit Rohtang Pass, even if it opens in May. I booked my permit online from the official website of the Himachal Pradesh state government.
It was an easy process, but permits are limited to conserve the environment, so it’s always best to apply in advance. The permit charges an environmental fee, congestion charges, and a vehicle tax on some occasions.
Also, there may be vehicle registrations that may have restrictions, so check before you plan to go. If you take the services of a local taxi, the drivers may be aware of the permit procedures and can facilitate the paperwork.
Where Can You See Snow If Rohtang Is Closed?
Though I was unable to make it to Rohtang Pass in April, I still had a good time at Snow Point, which you can visit when the pass is closed.
This place is usually near Gulaba, depending on where the road is cleared. The scenery was great, with snow-covered mountains as far as the eye can see.
There was a lot of snow for skiing, snowboarding, and building snowmen. If you don’t have your own snow gear, you can rent it from local shops.
The best part? There were fewer people than there were during the peak Rohtang season, which made it a serene experience.
Best Alternatives to Rohtang Pass
If Rohtang happens to be closed when you visit, don’t panic. Here are some great alternatives I found:
सोलंग घाटी:
A short drive from Manali, Solang Valley has beautiful snowy landscapes and plenty of adventure sports like paragliding, skiing, and zip-lining.
The valley is surrounded by tall mountains, and the fresh, cool air is refreshing. Even if you’re not an adventure sports enthusiast, you can take a cable car ride to see great views of the snow-covered mountains.
गुलाबा:
This is where the road to Rohtang is usually blocked by too much snow, but it still has great snowy landscapes.
The scenery is beautiful, with snow-covered trees and peaceful landscapes that are great for photography. It’s less crowded than Solang, offering a more serene experience. I had a nice walk in the snow, enjoying the natural scenery.
Hamta Pass:
If you are a trekking enthusiast, Hamta Pass is a good choice. It’s not too crowded and offers stunning views of the snow-covered mountains.
The trek starts at Jobra near Manali and takes you through green meadows, forests, and then snow-covered paths. The white and green contrast is breathtaking. It’s a moderate trek, easy for beginners if they prepare a bit.
Sissu:
On the other side of the Atal Tunnel, Sissu is also reachable even if Rohtang is shut. It has stunning waterfalls, snowy landscapes, and a stunning village life.
The drive through the Atal Tunnel is thrilling, and when you arrive at Sissu, the landscape of the Chandra River with snow-covered mountains is simply breathtaking. It’s a great place to witness the untouched beauty of Lahaul Valley.
Final Traveler Tips
Check Updates:
Always take the latest road updates from local authorities before you book your trip. Weather in the mountains is unpredictable, and it affects how you can travel.
Warm Clothing:
It can be chilly even in May. Dress in layers, and don’t forget gloves, hats, and sunglasses to protect your eyes from snow glare. Waterproof boots and jackets are a good idea if you are going to play in the snow.
परमिट:
Book your Rohtang Pass permit online in advance so that you don’t have to worry later. Carry a printed copy because sometimes mobile networks don’t work properly in the mountains.
Hire a Local Driver:
If you are not comfortable driving in the mountains, hiring a local driver can be safer, especially when the roads are slippery. Local drivers are familiar with the terrain and weather, making it safer.
My visit to Rohtang Pass was an experience of a lifetime, although I was unable to reach the summit in April. The snow, the scenery, and the rush were all worth every second. I hope this helps you plan your ideal mountain holiday!
